Bangladesh Desperately Needs a Different Kind of Leadership — One That Is Not Tied to Western Interests or Secular Compromises to Break Free From the Current Defeatist Situation and Challenge Western Hegemony

US Special Envoy Sergio Gor visited Bangladesh from July 30 to August 1, 2026, marking his first official trip to the country since becoming US Ambassador to India.  The mission focused on assessing Bangladesh’s foreign policy trajectory, particularly its deepening ties with China and strategic balancing between major powers. During the visit, Gor met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, and Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi to discuss bilateral relations, trade expansion, and regional security.  Diplomatic observers noted the visit aimed to evaluate Washington's efforts to expand its military and commercial presence in Bangladesh and to promote inclusive democracy, while addressing concerns over Dhaka's China-oriented foreign policy and proposed economic corridors. (Source: The Daily Star, Times of India)

Comment:

This visit comes at a critical time. Bangladesh is about to join a Saudi-led maritime alliance to tackle the Houthi threat in the Red Sea. While the coalition is presented as a defensive move, it serves American interests first. The US is already engaged against Iran in the Hormuz Strait and cannot afford another closure. So, it is using regional allies like Bangladesh to do its work — a clear proxy initiative.

But why does Bangladesh find itself in this position? The answer lies in its place within the Western world order. Its secular leadership, no matter how nationalistic it claims to be, cannot imagine itself beyond Western hegemony. This is the hard reality. The country is caught between two giants: America wants Bangladesh to distance itself from China, while China offers economic support that Bangladesh desperately needs. But Bangladesh cannot independently seek China's support because of American pressure through trade deals, conditions, and visits from diplomats like Gor. This is a tough balancing act — one that will always leave Bangladesh struggling.

And this struggle becomes even more dangerous when we consider America's current position. When America is losing against Iran and its authority is fading in the Middle East and Persian region, visits like this are pressure points. The real goal is to use Bangladesh’s Muslim armed forces as scapegoats to fight other Muslims for American purposes. This is not just geopolitics; it is a moral failure and betrayal of the trust of Allah (swt) and the Ummah.

This is why Bangladesh desperately needs a different kind of leadership — one that is not tied to Western interests or secular compromises. It needs the leadership of the promised Khilafah (Caliphate) on the method of the Prophethood. Only such leadership can break free from the current defeatist situation and challenge Western hegemony. As the Quran reminds us:

[وَلَا تَرْكَنُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ فَتَمَسَّكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ]

"And do not lean toward the oppressors, lest the Fire touch you" [Surah Hud 11:113]. Bangladesh must stop leaning on oppressors — whether America or its proxies — and start standing on its own principles.
